Thanks to Paul Green for this report: The 11 boats that entered the Eastport Yacht Club Fall Brawl October 28-29 raced in light breeze and tides driven by a full moon. As we motored out to the racecourse on Saturday, the predictions for stable wind were not in our favor. But after a brief AP, a westerly breeze filled in and the Race Committee was able to reset the course and start four races in a solid breeze that ranged between five to ten knots. By the end of race four, it was clear the breeze was shutting off and it was time to head in. On shore, EYC provided a welcoming environment for sailors to enjoy a post-race cocktail and share stories about their moments of glory as well as bruises to their egos and bodies. On Sunday, the RC was able to squeeze in one more race in a fading breeze. After race one, with a two hour wait before the next prediction for more wind, the J/70 competitors collectively decided to call it a day. Over the entire weekend, the light and shifty wind conditions forced tacticians to weigh staying in pressure vs. seeking current relief. When the wind and current align, it can tempt teams to sail toward the darker water only to be swept away by strong current. Fast teams were able to stitch together a path to weather by linking fleeting puffs to fleeting puffs. As the winds died on Sunday, the current had more and more of an impact causing havoc for teams who hoisted their spinnakers too early on the offset leg. In the end, Henry Filter’s Wild Child took first place with finishes of 2,7,2,2,4. One point behind in the standings was Peter Bowe and Mike McNamara on Tea Dance Snake, followed by Jenn Norwood and Team Zava who were in first place at the end of Saturday but were unable to compete on Sunday due to a scheduling conflict. Tip of the hat goes to John Dennerlein for his second-place finish in the last race. He almost won it too, but Peter and Mike know this water well and were able to use their local knowledge and boat speed skills to best John on the last leg. Congratulations are also in order for Isaac Breen-Franklin and team Foreign Affairs who finished third in the first race of the event.
